Etiology

Etiology

The authors Freeman and Pennings, in their extensive study on insulin resistance, raise the aspect of etiology, i.e. the origin, the cause of this metabolic disorder. They show that IO can be divided into acquired, hereditary and mixed, but the majority of patients with acquired insulin resistance predominate. Acquired insulin resistance is caused by the following factors:

• Excess dysfunctional adipose tissue

•Lack of physical activity

• Nutritional imbalance

• Medications (glucocorticoids, anti-adrenergics, protease inhibitors, atypical antipsychotics and some exogenous insulins)

• Increased sodium content in the diet

• Lipotoxicity due to excess circulating free fatty acids

In addition to the hereditary components of the above etiologies of insulin resistance, there are a number of unrelated genetic syndromes associated with insulin resistance
